South Charleston is a city in Kanawha County, West Virginia, USA. The population was 13,390 at the 2000 census. South Charleston was established in 1906, but not incorporated until 1919 by special charter enacted by the West Virginia Legislature. It is named because of its location on the south side of the Kanawha River, although it is actually west, not south, of the city of Charleston. South Charleston is located at 38219N, 814243W (38.352455, -81.712001)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.5 km (8.3 mi). 19.2 km (7.4 mi) of it is land and 2.3 km (0.9 mi) of it (10.60%) is water. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 13,390 people, 6,316 households, and 3,764 families residing in the city. The population density was 695.8/km (1,803.0/mi). There were 6,770 housing units at an average density of 351.8/km (911.6/mi). The racial makeup of the city was 90.85% White, 6.67% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.24% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.56% of the population.
